speccygeekgrrl42: (dammit Star Trek! I'm a slash fan!)
[personal profile] speccygeekgrrl42
Yay, a couple of answers for Top Fives!

[livejournal.com profile] moorishflower asked for my Top Five Trope Scenarios. :D I'm going with fanfic tropes, not inherent-in-the-show tropes (although they can and do overlap xD)

5. Stockholm Schnozzing (as a subset of Foe Yay)
I don't know why, but I fucking LOVE Stockholm Syndrome fic. It can go either way, bad guy held captive by good guy or goodie kidnapped by baddie, I just love the shift from "oh my god I hate you, let me go, die in a fire" to civility to friendship/fucking. xD I love it, but I'm not very good at writing it (I've tried. Many times. I'm just too fluff-bound.) so, uh, recs, anyone? :D

4. OT3 (inclusive/related: Power Trio)
I know exactly where my thing for functioning, mutually loving threesomes came from, and it rhymes with Tar Streck. xD It's shown up in a lot of fandoms since then, but seriously, Kirk/Spock/McCoy is the ultimate example of what I love in this trope: the relationships they have with each other are all different, but it's underlaid with the same trust and affection and willingness to do anything, even die (see: The Empath) to keep the others safe. That's the thing Heroes is really lacking for me, that kind of a symbiotic relationship.

3. Mindlink Mates
TELEPATHY. Oh man, this one gets me every time. Mental connections are so great. The intensity of being able to feel what another person is feeling, to know what's on their mind, that's good enough, but the thought of having someone's presence always there, never being alone... some people think it's weird, I think it's incredibly reassuring. And, yeah, hot. Mind sex > phone sex. xD

2. Alternate Universe (inclusive: fandom fusion)
AUs are so awesome when they're done right. Taking extraordinary people and putting them in normal places, or vice versa, changing the situation around, exploring the "what if x had done y instead of z?", these things make me wriggle with happiness. (but... not high school AUs. I definitely had more than enough of those back when I was an anime fangirl...)

I love post-apocalyptic AUs, historical AUs, meeting another way AUs, fantasy AUs, I will nom them all. One of my favorite SGA AUs is Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose, in which Rodney is a college professor after John dies... I cried SO FUCKING HARD but it's such an excellent story. My favorite AU in Heroes is not one specific story, it's the Petrelli Twin'verse. I totally called Gabriel and Peter as twins before the "they're brothers" spoiler even dropped. xD

I'm more wary of crossovers than I am of fusions, but those can fit here, and there are some ASTOUNDING ones out there. ([livejournal.com profile] brighteyed_jill's The Secret's In The Telling is a brilliant Supernatural/Heroes crossover, for example.)

1. ~fuck or die~ (inclusive: aliens made them do it, pon farr, "we'll freeze if we don't cuddle!", sex pollen, etc.)
THIS TROPE. OHMYGOD. On the one hand, it's so cheesy and overdone! On the other hand, the only way something becomes a cliche is because it works for so many people! You can stick it in just about any fandom, use it to throw together just about anyone (but seriously, the ideal uses are to break through that "does he-doesn't he?" barrier or turn foe-yay into ho-yay), parody it, take it seriously, crack it out, make it dire or hilarious (or both); it's got the potential to be intensely sexy or really, really awkward (or both!), and... well, it's fun! :D

Not one of my faves, but entertainingly connected: read the bottom line in the explanation of Meta Fic. Subreality Cafe? Yeah, I played around there with various muses a lot. (...MST3K muses, mostly, actually. DON'T JUDGE ME.)

[livejournal.com profile] ozfroggirl wanted to know my Top Five Star Trek Fanvids.

(in no particular order, all TOS unless indicated)

5. Intergalactic Trek. Humor, set to the Beastie Boys' "Intergalactic". HILARIOUS.

4. A Bones Tribute Sing-A-Long. Humor, set to "Dr. McCoy" by S.P.O.C.K. HE'S A DOCTOR, NOT A YOUTUBE VIDEO

3. Dante's Prayer. Slash, Kirk/Spock, set to the Loreena McKennit song of the same name. Post ST:III. May bring a tear. Maybe I'm just a sap.

2. Steady As She Goes. Gen/humor, set to the Raconteurs song of the same name. I don't know why I love the choppy editing but it really works, and I can't watch this without laughing. :D

1. Closer, the gold standard of TOS slash vids. Kirk/Spock, implied violence and rape, but seriously, this vid tells a pretty complete story in and of itself, based on the question "what would have happened if they didn't make it to Vulcan fast enough in Amok Time?" (Someone made a complementary version based on XI and the question "what'll happen now that there is no Vulcan?")

...and if anyone knows of some good Spock/McCoy vids, hook a sister up. >.>

Anyone else? C'mon, I love doing these! :D

See, I was actually pleased enough with the books that I didn't really want to look for fic. But, I've never seen that particular little rant before. She's a brilliant author, but even the most brilliant authors can get petty over their work, I suspect.

So, a rebuttal.

It's like with Anne Rice, I suspect. She got all butthurt over fanfic, too, but it never stopped people from writing it.

I know I shouldn't, especially not before I even finish the trilogy, but I'm all *flail* about the Fool. >.> I liek him.

She's written another series called 'The Liveship Traders' where the Fool shows up, albeit in a different guise. :)

What's "The Tawny Man"? I just looked on PBS.com for the Liveship Traders but that's what came up besides the Assassin books.

Date: 2009-08-11 10:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moorishflower.livejournal.com
Okay, this is the order of the books:

The Farseer Trilogy
1. Assassin's Apprentice
2. Royal Assassin
3. Assassin's Quest

The Tawny Man Trilogy
1. Fool's Errand
2. Golden Fool
3. Fool's Quest

The Liveship Trader's Trilogy
1. Ship of Magic
2. The Mad Ship
3. Ship of Destiny

Once you're finished with the Farseer books, you can move on straight to Tawny Man (which deals very heavily with the Fool), or try the Liveship Traders (which has different main characters in a different place, and deals with the origin of the sea serpents). As long as you finish the Farseer books first, you'll be able to understand both of them.

She's also writing a new trilogy called the Rain Wilds Chronicles, the first book of which ('The Dragon Keeper') is now out. And she's got a completely different series called the Soldier Son Trilogy, starting with 'Shaman's Crossing.'

Oooh, books and books... I don't know whether to wait for Plattsburgh and see if there are any at the used bookstore, or wheedle my mom into taking me to the mall TO GET MY GODDAMN HAIR CUT ALREADY and sneak into the bookstore to see what's in stock. xD

(ps, I wanted to tell you and I just remembered: my psychiatrist acts a lot like Walter Bishop sometimes.)

From: [identity profile] moorishflower.livejournal.com
Your psychiatrist takes recreational drugs and designs monsters for a living? :D

Dude, I could recommend you so many fantasy books. There's this other author, David Farland, who wrote the Runelords books (book 1 is called 'The Sum of All Men'), and those books are amazing.

Date: 2009-08-11 10:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] speccygeekgrrl.livejournal.com
Oh, are we gonna start this now? :D

Have you read anything by Garth Nix? His Abhorsen trilogy is INCREDIBLE. You know how some people can build worlds you sink right into? That's those books, for me.

Dianna Wynne Jones? Her Chronicles of Chrestomanci are so cool, they're all layered together the further you get into them, with a whole set of universes to play in (one of the underlying ideas is that there are 9 universes, and everyone's got another them in the other universes, except sometimes there's a person whose other thems all died/didn't get born, so they have nine lives, and they're the Chrestomancis, and I love them xD)

And I'm just going to assume you know about Mercedes Lackey. EVERYONE knows Mercedes Lackey. xD

Date: 2009-08-11 10:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moorishflower.livejournal.com
Oh it's on.

I've heard of Garth Nix and Mercedes Lackey, but not Dianna Wynne Jones. Although that sounds kinda like Stephen King's Dark Tower series (which, if you've never read it, go, go now. Even if you hate King's other books you'll love the Dark Tower series).

Let's see...I grew up on the books of R.A. Salvatore. He's incredibly prolific, but his best books, I think, were his Drizzt Do'Urden stories, starting with The Dark Elf Trilogy. I reread those books so many times in school that they tried to diagnose me with schizotypal personality disorder, lol. (It didn't fly, of course.)

Then there's David Eddings, who wrote the Belgariad series and its followup, the Malloreon, both of which consist of five books each. He wrote them back in the 80s, but they're still amazing. <3 After those, he wrote the Elenium and the Tamuli series (three books each), which have the single most awesome paladin/knight character ever. :D

Date: 2009-08-11 10:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] speccygeekgrrl.livejournal.com
I freaking LOVED the Drizzt books! :D :D :D

I've heard of David Eddings, but never sampled him.

I'm not by any means reccing these but I was addicted to them when I was too young and easily amused to care about misogyny: Piers Anthony's Xanth series. It's like 30 books of crazy fantasy built on a world where puns are literal and everyone has a Talent, whether big and awesome or tiny and lame. They were funny, but looking back on them, goddamn did that man have issues!

OH. I was going to ask about Francesca Lia Block, but you have some of those... ;D

From: [identity profile] moorishflower.livejournal.com
I remember the Xanth books! So crazy, like Discworld but...even weirder, lol. But yeah, David Eddings and David Farland are very, very good (and David Farland has some new series that continues on from his Runelords books, eee~)

Oh my god now I have to go reread EVERYTHING.
